Van Signage Rules - What You Need To Know

chevron-icon-white

Van wrapping is an extremely effective way to advertise your business to potential customers every day. But, before you get started with a design, it's extremely important to follow the legal van signage rules, as non-compliance could lead to fines, failed MOTs or your vehicle taken off the road.

We’ve been wrapping vans for over 20 years, and with this knowledge, have put together a clear guide to van signage rules that you should know before getting started.

Don’t Obstruct Important Features

When applying vinyl graphics or a wrap, it's crucial to never cover:

  • Number plates
  • Headlights, brake lights or indicators
  • Reflectors
  • Legally required notices, such as “Long Vehicle” signs or VIN plates

These features must all remain visible and functional at all times. Even partial obstruction can result in penalties.

Window Tinting & Visibility

Front windows and windscreen:

Must remain effectively free of any opaque wrap or tint. You cannot cover any part of the windscreen or driver/passenger side windows with printed vinyl or films that might block your vision.

Rear windows:

On vans, the rear side and rear windows can be more heavily wrapped or tinted, as there are no strict limits. However, the overall visibility for the driver must still be good, which includes through the mirrors.

Avoid Misleading, Offensive or Dangerous Content

A wrapped van is a mobile advert, and it therefore needs to comply with the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) rules:

  • No misleading claims (e.g. false pricing, fake certifications)
  • No offensive imagery or language
  • No graphics that could distract or endanger other road users

A professional, clean wrap design isn’t just about branding; it needs to show credibility and compliance.

Changing the Colour? Inform the DVLA

If your wrap completely changes the base colour of your van, you’re legally required to notify the DVLA of the change.

This includes full colour-change wraps but doesn’t usually apply to partial wraps, logos, or panel graphics.

Don’t Mimic Emergency or Highway Vehicles

It's illegal to design your van in any way that can look like:

  • Police vehicles
  • Ambulances
  • Fire and rescue
  • Highway maintenance units

This includes patterns (like Battenburg markings), colour combinations, and high-visibility chevrons usually used on emergency or road safety vehicles.

Use a Professional Installer

Wraps can go wrong very easily. Bubbles, peeling edges, or misaligned prints don’t just look unprofessional, but they could also lead to compliance issues.

At CJ Signs, we’ve been wrapping vans for over 20 years and understand every aspect of legal and practical compliance. From design to fitting, we’ll ensure your wrap looks great and stays road-legal.
